CHICO, California — Turner Construction Company proudly announces the completion of the new Behavioral and Social Sciences Building at California State University, Chico. This 94,000-square-foot facility marks a significant milestone for both the university and sustainable construction, becoming the first net-zero energy building on the campus. The building is designed to generate more energy than it consumes and serves as a model for future eco-conscious developments.

The new building has earned LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, highlighting its energy-efficient systems and sustainability efforts. Among its green features are solar panels, LED lighting, a chilled beam cooling system, and the use of native plants throughout its landscaped areas. The building’s water-efficient infrastructure and the incorporation of eco-conscious materials, such as benches made from repurposed valley oak trees, reduce its environmental impact while adding to its charm and sustainability.

Sustainability Efforts and Smart Construction

Turner Construction didn’t just focus on the final product but also integrated sustainability into the construction process itself. The company employed smart building technology to optimize temporary heating during the build, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality. Turner also switched to renewable diesel for equipment, helping to minimize fuel consumption. Additionally, nearly 80 tons of clean drywall cutoffs were diverted from landfills, as the construction team recycled the material during the build, further lowering the project’s environmental footprint.

"This project is a testament to our commitment to sustainability," said Jim Hull III, Turner’s Construction Executive. "From its net-zero design to its water-saving infrastructure, every element of this building was thoughtfully crafted to reduce environmental impact while providing an exceptional learning environment for students. We are honored to support Chico State’s vision for a more sustainable future."

Innovative Features for Academic Excellence

The Behavioral and Social Sciences Building is more than just an environmentally friendly space. It is designed to enhance the academic experience for students and faculty alike. The building houses nine academic departments, a large 130-seat lecture hall, 22 classrooms, five laboratories, and study and breakout areas to foster collaboration and learning. One of the standout features of the building is the indoor arboretum, which adds a natural touch to the academic environment.

The facility also serves as a community hub, hosting the Community Legal Information Clinic and the Gender and Sexuality Equity Coalition. To fuel students' creativity and energy, a Love Bird coffee shop, operated by alumna Rebecca Turi, offers a cozy spot for relaxation and socializing.

The building's open floor plan and abundant natural light create an inviting atmosphere that encourages interaction among students and staff. Whether in the lecture halls or the social spaces, every corner of the building is designed to help students thrive academically, personally, and professionally.

A Legacy of Sustainability and Innovation

As the first net-zero energy building at Chico State, the Behavioral and Social Sciences Building is setting a new standard for university construction projects. It not only represents a leap forward in sustainable design but also reinforces the university’s commitment to fostering a greener future for both students and the surrounding community. The incorporation of green technologies and eco-conscious materials ensures that the building will continue to operate efficiently for decades to come.

This state-of-the-art facility serves as a beacon for other educational institutions and private-sector construction projects alike, demonstrating how sustainable building practices can coexist with functionality, innovation, and academic excellence.

Looking Ahead

The completion of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Building serves as a catalyst for more sustainable development at California State University, Chico, and across educational institutions nationwide. It exemplifies how design, technology, and sustainability can come together to create spaces that will enhance learning while reducing environmental impact.

With the opening of this building, Turner Construction has again proven that sustainability is not just a goal, but an essential part of the future of construction. The team looks forward to continuing its work on similar projects that combine sustainable practices with cutting-edge construction techniques.
