WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – A Massachusetts driver is facing multiple charges after allegedly fatally striking three construction workers on Interstate 91 before attempting to flee the scene, authorities said.

Victims Identified

The tragic incident occurred around 12:50 a.m. on Friday, March 28, when 29-year-old Bilal Griffith lost control of his vehicle while traveling at a "very high rate of speed," Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni said during a press conference. The vehicle crashed into a guardrail, flipped over, and struck the construction crew working on the highway.

The victims have been identified as Igor Costa, 26, Ryan Almeida, 48, and Raul Bohorquez, 57.

“I want to first express my condolences to the loved ones of the three victims of this horrible, horrible tragedy,” Gulluni said.

Griffith Arrested and Charged

Following the crash, Griffith exited the overturned vehicle and attempted to flee the scene on foot, leading authorities on a brief pursuit before being apprehended. Investigators determined the vehicle was registered to him, leading to his arrest.

Griffith has been charged with three counts of manslaughter and one count of leaving the scene of personal injury and death. He is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on April 2.

Company Statement and Community Mourning

The victims were employees of Premier Fence, a construction company based in Canton, about 20 miles southwest of Boston.

“Our employees love what they do, we are a family and work together to demonstrate the highest standard of professionalism, with job safety being priority number one,” the company said in a March 31 statement. “Today we gathered as a team with the support of a grief counselor to help us process this incredibly difficult news.”

Premier Fence has also stated that they are cooperating with authorities as the investigation continues.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Authorities are still piecing together the events leading up to the crash, including whether Griffith was under the influence at the time. Investigators are also reviewing surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts to gain a full understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The case has sent shockwaves through the local construction industry, highlighting the dangers that road crews face while working in high-traffic areas. Safety advocates are calling for stricter enforcement of speed limits and work zone protections to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

West Springfield, where the crash took place, is located approximately 90 miles southwest of Boston.

As the community mourns, state officials are urging drivers to exercise caution and remain vigilant when passing through construction zones.
