Construction Begins on Dewey Park in Ward 7

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – City officials have announced that construction is officially underway on a new 4-acre park in Northeast Oklahoma City, bringing fresh recreational opportunities and green space to Ward 7.

The future Dewey Park, located at 3500 N. Lindsay Ave., is being developed on the site of the former Dewey Elementary School. The City of Oklahoma City purchased the property in December 2024 from Oklahoma City Public Schools with the goal of transforming it into a vibrant community park.

A Community-Driven Vision

The project is largely driven by the Capitol View Neighborhood Association, which applied and was selected to participate in the City’s Strong Neighborhoods Initiative (SNI)—a program aimed at revitalizing neighborhoods and fostering community engagement.

“The park will serve as a catalyst for revitalization and social interaction, fostering greater unity within the community through exercise, relaxation, stress reduction, and enhanced mental well-being for all,” said Priscilla Meadows-Norwood, President of the Capitol View Neighborhood Association. “The completion of Dewey Park marks the fulfillment of the dedicated efforts of past and present Presidents, and the members of the Capitol View Neighborhood Association.”

Innovative Design and Unique Features

Dewey Park will be the first neighborhood park in Oklahoma City to feature large, flower-themed playsets, creating a whimsical and welcoming environment for children and families.

“OKC Parks Landscape Architect Subhashini Gamagedara did a wonderful job listening to the community; she has designed a one-of-a-kind space that will be enjoyed for generations,” said Urban Revitalization Program Planner Shannon Entz. “Our SNI team has thoroughly enjoyed working with the neighborhood and can’t wait for the grand opening this summer.”

Beyond the playsets, the park will offer a variety of amenities designed to accommodate people of all ages. These include:

  • A walking path for exercise and leisurely strolls
  • Public art installations showcasing local talent
  • Shade structures providing relief from the sun
  • Outdoor exercise equipment to promote health and wellness
  • Picnic tables for family gatherings and community events
  • Sports courts for recreational activities
  • Lush landscaping and new trees to enhance the natural beauty of the space
  • A memorial wall honoring influential community leaders who have made a lasting impact in Ward 7

A New Gathering Place for the Community

The City of Oklahoma City sees Dewey Park as more than just a recreational space—it’s a place that will foster community engagement and bring neighbors together.

“We’re so excited to add a new park in the Capitol View Neighborhood,” said OKC Parks Director Melinda McMillan-Miller. “We hope this park becomes a gathering space for the community and creates more opportunity for residents to enjoy the outdoors.”

Looking Ahead

Construction is expected to move swiftly, with the park on track to open in mid-summer 2025, according to city officials.

The Strong Neighborhoods Initiative will continue working alongside the Capitol View Neighborhood Association to ensure the park remains a well-maintained and cherished community asset for years to come.
