Construction CEO Empowers Women to Forge Connections in AEC
Engineer and Business Owner Schillivia Baptiste Advocates for Increased Diversity in the Industry.
Schillivia Baptiste's interest in engineering began during her high school years in the ACE Mentor program. Participating in a local summer engineering initiative at Manhattan College sparked her passion, leading her to earn degrees in civil engineering and eventually establish her own firm.
As the CEO of Laland Baptiste Construction Management and Engineering Consultants, based in Mineola, New York, Baptiste is dedicated to increasing the representation of women and people of color in engineering and STEM careers.
Baptiste serves as the president of the New York chapter of Professional Women in Construction (PWC), a nonprofit focused on supporting and connecting women while promoting diversity in architecture, engineering, construction, and related fields.
In an interview with Construction Dive, Baptiste discusses her firm, her role as a mentor, and the critical importance of networking.
CONSTRUCTION DIVE: What motivated you to start your own firm?
SCHILLIVIA BAPTISTE: Starting my own firm has allowed me the opportunity and flexibility to engage in projects that uplift communities. Construction and development projects can intentionally transform neighborhoods. It’s essential to me that our projects are not only structurally sound but also positively impact the surrounding areas.
What types of projects are you currently involved in?
We were recently awarded the prime contract for the New York City Department of Design and Construction’s Mentoring Program, the city’s first mayoral mentoring initiative. As an MWBE firm, our transition from sub-consultant to prime consultant has enabled us to manage multimillion-dollar contracts, paving the way for more city and state projects.
Since then, we've secured prime projects with the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Office of General Services, and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
What are some benefits of working in construction?
At Laland Baptiste, we have mentored other companies, restored nature preserves, helped rebuild communities affected by natural disasters, and worked on upgrading a local homeless shelter.
One of the most rewarding aspects is witnessing a two-dimensional drawing evolve into a tangible structure. It’s the visual proof of our efforts, bringing our designs to life.
How has your involvement in PWC influenced your perspective on the industry?
My engagement with PWC has introduced me to a valuable sisterhood within the AEC industry. I've built a network of like-minded women leading companies in a predominantly male field.
PWC provides informative programming, exclusive resources, leadership and networking opportunities, as well as scholarships and mentorship programs. Our members include a diverse array of professionals from construction and allied industries.
As the president of the New York chapter, I have gained insights from leaders nationwide who are dedicated to promoting women in the workplace.
What advice do you have for young women considering a career in construction?
You have the power to shape the world you want to live in. Your knowledge, insight, and determination will drive your success in this field.
Begin with a solid foundation by pursuing an ABET-accredited curriculum. Get involved in organizations like Professional Women in Construction, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, or the National Society of Black Engineers. These groups offer invaluable programming and networking that can advance your career.
Never stop learning—continuous growth is vital to staying relevant. Remember, believing you know it all is when you risk falling behind.
Most importantly, pursue what you love. Don’t chase money; it will come. Focus on making a difference and creating an impact for your generation and the ones to follow.
