Terabase Secures $130 Million to Scale Automated Solar Construction

US-based solar technology company Terabase Energy has successfully raised $130 million in funding to advance its automated solar project construction capabilities, specifically through its Terafab solar assembly line. This robotic-driven system is designed to enhance the speed and efficiency of solar module installation and reduce overall project costs.
This financing round, led by the SoftBank Vision Fund, a technology-focused investment fund, brings the total capital raised by Terabase to $200 million. The funds will support the expansion of the Terafab program, which Terabase believes will significantly streamline the construction of solar power plants by cutting costs and construction times.

The increased efficiency of Terafab is particularly crucial as global demand for renewable energy continues to grow. "The surge in energy demand, particularly from AI data centers, underscores the urgency of scalable, sustainable solutions," said Kentaro Matsui, managing partner at SoftBank Global Advisers. According to the Electric Power Research Institute, data centers in the US are projected to more than double their current power consumption by 2030.
Matsui further emphasized the importance of Terabase’s innovation: “Terabase’s innovative approach to digitalizing and automating solar power plant deployment positions it as a leader in this transition.”
The Terafab Approach: Automation Meets Solar Efficiency
At the core of Terabase’s growth is its Terafab program, which has been described as a “factory to make factories.” This approach leverages robotics and automation to take on some of the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) tasks typically performed by human labor at solar farms. According to Terabase, this can lead to a 25% increase in the operational efficiency of solar projects.
Terabase first deployed the Terafab system at the White Wing Ranch solar farm in Texas in 2023. Following this, Terabase CEO and founder Matt Campbell noted that the automated system addresses a critical issue in the industry: an “epidemic” of poor-quality construction practices in the EPC sector. The company’s use of robotics aims to eliminate many of these inefficiencies and enhance the overall quality of solar installations.
So far, Terabase has utilized Terafab to install 40 MW of solar capacity at commercial projects across the United States. The company’s aggressive expansion strategy aims to install hundreds of megawatts of additional solar capacity by the end of 2024.
