New Region Will Include Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.

Chattanooga, TN – Skanska USA, the U.S. division of the Sweden-based construction giant, is expanding its footprint in the U.S. with the creation of a new mid-Atlantic division, the company announced in a news release on Nov. 22. The new region will span four key markets: Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina, and will leverage the strength of its current offices in these areas.

Skanska appointed a local leader to oversee the new division. Mark Balling, who currently serves as executive vice president and general manager for Skanska USA’s building operations in North Carolina and Virginia, will take on the new role starting January 1, the release noted.

“The combined experience and expertise in this new region will help Skanska better serve previously distinct geographies, address opportunities in the available space of this larger region, and grow an already strong presence in the region,” Balling said in the release.

The establishment of the mid-Atlantic division is part of Skanska’s ongoing commitment to expanding its operations in the U.S. This move follows a successful third-quarter earnings report where the company saw a 130% year-over-year profit increase, reaching 1.3 billion crowns (approximately $120.1 million). Skanska CEO Anders Danielsson has expressed confidence in the U.S. market, projecting strength for at least the next 12 months.

In a bid to broaden its portfolio in the newly established division, Skanska is focusing on several large-scale projects. The company has already established a presence in the region, opening an office in Vienna, Virginia in 2021 to tap into civil construction opportunities.

Current projects in the mid-Atlantic region include:

  • The George Mason University Life Sciences and Engineering Building at the Prince William County campus in Virginia
  • 17xM, an 11-story, 334,000-square-foot trophy office building in the heart of Washington D.C.’s central business district
  • OZMA, a 12-story, mixed-use residential development with 275 luxury apartments in the NoMa neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
