Balfour Beatty Starts Northern Virginia Science Center Construction

Balfour Beatty has officially kicked off the construction of the Northern Virginia Science Center in Dulles, Virginia, a project commissioned by the Science Museum of Virginia. Once completed, the center is expected to become a premier, interactive hub for science enthusiasts of all ages, with an estimated 300,000 visitors each year.
The Northern Virginia Science Center will boast a cutting-edge facility with five primary exhibition galleries designed to offer immersive, hands-on experiences, highlighting both science and the natural environment. The planned galleries include Flow, Helios, Wonder, Human, and Habitat.

In addition to the galleries, the science center will incorporate classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, administrative spaces, and outdoor terraces. Balfour Beatty, in collaboration with its design partners at HGA, is committed to sustainable construction practices, using materials that reduce embodied carbon and integrating pollinator gardens into the landscaping.
Art Malacarne, Vice President of Balfour Beatty in the Mid-Atlantic, shared: "Balfour Beatty looks forward to delivering the new 70,000-square-foot Northern Virginia Science Center in our community. Our project team is dedicated to being a champion for our client and plan to implement a collaborative, project-first approach to bring this landmark project to fruition. In partnership with the Department of General Services, our trade partners and project stakeholders, we will provide a premier facility that will inspire a love of learning science, technology, engineering and mathematics that fuels the next generation workforce.”
Balfour Beatty has previously worked on various notable museums in Virginia, including the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, a 120,000-square-foot, two-story facility. The company also contributed to the Pentagon Memorial and the Air Force Memorial.
Construction of the Northern Virginia Science Center is already in progress, with completion anticipated by late 2026. For more details about the new science center in the Dulles Technology Corridor, visit novasci.org.
