A construction sign in Elk Grove displayed a racial slur overnight, city officials confirmed.

In a statement Sunday, officials clarified that the message board does not belong to the city but is the property of a contractor associated with the Sacramento Area Sewer District’s Harvest Water Project.

Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen condemned the incident, saying the sign was located at Laguna Boulevard and Franklin Boulevard.

"This is shameful and unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our city. I want answers and accountability," Singh-Allen said.

City officials stated that the sign has been turned off, and they are working with the Sacramento Area Sewer District to investigate the matter.

"Elk Grove is no place for hate. The City Council and staff reaffirm our unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful community for all. We stand united in rejecting, discouraging, and disapproving of any hate-based activity or conduct," the city said.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Elk Grove Police Department at 916-714-5115.
