Pittsburgh International Airport’s massive $1.57 billion modernization project has reached a key milestone, with construction now 80% complete. The ambitious terminal redevelopment, one of the largest ongoing airport projects in the U.S., remains on track to welcome passengers later this year, according to a January 24 news release shared with Construction Dive.
Led by the Allegheny County Airport Authority, the project is set to transform the airport by consolidating airline operations, passenger facilities, and public spaces under one roof. Additionally, the project includes a redesigned roadway system and a state-of-the-art, multilevel parking garage to improve accessibility and streamline the travel experience.
Progress on Key Construction Elements
Workers have made significant progress on several critical components of the project, including:
Escalator Installation
The first set of escalators has been installed.
Baggage System Testing
A modern baggage handling system is undergoing testing.
Ceiling Tile Placement
Crews have begun installing ceiling tiles in key terminal areas.
Security Checkpoint
Work is advancing on the new security screening area.
Airline Ticket Counters
Installation of ticketing stations is currently underway.
In the coming months, construction teams will focus on completing essential interior details. This includes finalizing airline ticket counters, finishing the connector bridge linking the new and old terminals, and completing a bridge and tunnel system that will connect the new terminal to the existing airside terminal.Local Workforce and Regional Economic ImpactThe project is a major economic driver for the region, with a significant portion of the workforce and materials sourced locally.
According to the Allegheny County Airport Authority, more than 85% of construction materials have been sourced from local suppliers, ensuring that the investment benefits Pittsburgh and its surrounding communities.Construction is being carried out by a team of leading industry firms. Pittsburgh-based Mascaro serves as the general contractor, while construction management is handled by Turner Construction of New York City in partnership with PJ Dick (Pittsburgh) and Hunt Construction (Indianapolis).With the project nearing completion, Pittsburgh International Airport is on course to deliver a modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly terminal that will enhance travel experiences for years to come. The new facility is expected to open in 2025.
