BIG SKY, Mont. – A local construction worker is being celebrated for his heroic actions after a vehicle accident in Big Sky, where his quick thinking and resourcefulness helped save lives.
Shawn Carroll, an employee of Martel Construction, was the first person on the scene of the accident, which occurred on Andesite Mountain. A vehicle had gone over an embankment and ended up on its side in a precarious position on unstable snowpack, leaving two people trapped inside. Without hesitation, Carroll used a tow strap and his truck to secure the vehicle, preventing it from sliding further down the embankment.
"When I got there, the situation was extremely dangerous," Carroll explained. "I knew I had to act fast to stabilize the vehicle and keep it from moving. I didn’t think twice about jumping into action."
As the Big Sky Fire Department arrived, they took over the stabilization efforts, using Carroll’s tow strap to further secure the vehicle. The team then worked to safely extricate the trapped occupants, ensuring they were free from harm.

Captain Farmer, who responded to the scene, praised Carroll for his quick thinking and highlighted the importance of his actions. “Shawn’s quick thinking and decisive actions made a real difference in ensuring a positive outcome,” said Captain Farmer. “Without his help, the situation could have been far worse.”
Both Captain Farmer and other members of the responding team recognized Carroll’s crucial role in the successful rescue and emphasized the impact of his willingness to help in such a critical moment. The Big Sky Fire Department later publicly thanked Carroll for his selflessness and bravery, noting his actions as a testament to the strong sense of community in Big Sky.
“We are incredibly grateful for Shawn’s bravery,” said Fire Department spokesperson Jane Miller. “It’s not every day you see someone step up without hesitation in the face of danger. Shawn embodies the spirit of this community.”
In the aftermath of the incident, Carroll remained humble, stating, "I just did what anyone else would do in the situation. I’m glad I could help."
Carroll’s selfless actions have not gone unnoticed by the Big Sky community, and his bravery has served as a reminder of the importance of community unity in times of crisis.
