JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Jersey City Municipal Council is set to deliberate on a transformative proposal at its February 13 meeting, aiming to develop a pedestrian mall in the Power House District. If approved, the plan could bring a new wave of urban revitalization to the area, similar to the highly acclaimed Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza.

The proposed pedestrian mall would be situated on Provost Street, spanning from Bay Street to Morgan Street. This section of the city is already designated for significant cultural and artistic developments, including the construction of performing arts venues and spaces dedicated to the creative community. Additionally, it is slated to become the future home of the New Jersey Symphony, further solidifying the district as a hub for the arts.
City officials see the plan as a continuation of efforts to enhance public spaces. “The proposed project is an extension of the Fulop Administration’s efforts to expand much-needed outdoor recreational space,” Jersey City spokesperson Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione stated in an email to TAPinto Jersey City. She added that the pedestrian mall would be “a big benefit to the area.”
The legislation outlines several key components of the project. In addition to creating a pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare, the improvements would incorporate perimeter parking, public seating areas, park-like spaces, outdoor cafés, and other amenities designed to make the district more walkable and welcoming. The enhancements are expected to “enhance the movement, safety, convenience and enjoyment of pedestrians and benefit the municipality and adjoining properties.”

Supporters of the initiative argue that pedestrian malls contribute to economic growth, encourage tourism, and provide vital outdoor areas for both residents and visitors. If successful, the Power House District’s pedestrian mall could follow in the footsteps of the Newark Avenue Plaza, which has become a model for urban planning and community engagement.
While the plan has generated excitement among local business owners and residents, it is likely to undergo further discussions and refinements before moving forward. The February 13 council meeting will provide an opportunity for public input and further debate on the best path toward transforming Provost Street into a thriving pedestrian corridor.
