Clark Construction Group Selected for $800 Million Upgrade of Capital One Arena
Clark Construction Group, based in Bethesda, Maryland, has been awarded a contract by Monumental Sports & Entertainment to renovate Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. This announcement follows a recent public-private partnership formed with the city, aimed at enhancing the venue that hosts the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the NBA’s Washington Wizards.
The partnership was solidified after a tentative agreement was signed in March between MSE and Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. In April, the D.C. Council approved an investment of $515 million over the next three years to support the overall $800 million project. The specific contract value for Clark was not disclosed.
As part of the agreement, the city will purchase the arena for $87.5 million and lease it back until 2050, according to proposed legislation. The council is expected to vote on final approval later this fall.
Clark previously served as the general contractor for Capital One Arena when it was built in 1997.
The planned enhancements will modernize the arena, including an expanded main entrance at F Street, wider concourses, additional elevators, a 65% increase in concession space, and a 30% increase in restroom facilities.
Athlete spaces will see a growth of over 60%, with the addition of new training rooms, a players’ lounge, dining areas, and a family lounge. The Capitals will receive a new film room in their locker room, while the Wizards will benefit from a redesigned on-site training facility, which was previously unfeasible due to space limitations.
Additionally, construction crews will expand the event level by over 200,000 square feet to provide hospitality staff with a larger workspace.
San Francisco-based Gensler will design the project, the same firm responsible for the upcoming renovations at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, located about 40 miles from Capital One Arena.
