Clancy & Theys Construction Company, a prominent general contractor in the Southeast, has announced the retirement of Dean Conklin, Vice President of Construction for the Virginia Division. Conklin’s departure marks the conclusion of a distinguished 33-year career with the company.

When Conklin joined in 1991, the Virginia Division was a small team of just five, growing to its current staff of 85 under his leadership. He began his journey with Clancy & Theys as a project manager, mentored by then-Vice President and Division Manager Tommy Glasgow. Following Glasgow's retirement in 2007, Conklin assumed the role of vice president.

“I was fortunate to have some great partners and mentors during my time at Clancy & Theys, and the one thing they instilled in me early on was the importance of our people,” Conklin reflected. “Of the many things that have changed over the course of my career, one thing has always stayed true – our people are our greatest asset.”

Throughout his tenure, Conklin is particularly known for his hospitality projects along the Virginia Beach oceanfront, including the Courtyard by Marriott, Springhill Suites, and Sheraton hotel projects. His impressive portfolio extends beyond the Hampton Roads region, with significant contributions to projects like The Martin Agency in Richmond and the notable Casino Club at The Greenbrier, the country’s only private casino in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Colleagues and clients will remember his legacy of delivering complex projects within tight timelines and viewing challenges as opportunities for growth.

“Dean’s legacy is marked by his dedication, leadership, and passion for others,” stated Baker Glasgow, President of Clancy & Theys. “Growing up in the Hampton Roads area, it’s been a distinct pleasure of mine to watch this division flourish under his leadership. While we’ll certainly miss Dean, I have no doubt his legacy will continue to inspire our team for years to come. We’re incredibly grateful for his contributions to our team and wish him the best of luck in this next chapter.”

In his retirement, Conklin plans to visit his children and grandchildren across the Southeast and attend North Carolina State University football games.

Following Conklin’s retirement, Clancy & Theys is pleased to promote Project Executive Brian Viau to Vice President of Construction for the Virginia Division. With 20 years of experience at Clancy & Theys, Viau possesses a deep understanding of the company’s legacy and values, ensuring the continuation of quality work in the evolving landscape of the Virginia Division.
