Alabaster Approves $43.7M Rec Center, Library

The City of Alabaster has taken a major step in its ongoing redevelopment efforts, awarding a $43.7 million construction contract to Clements Dean Building Company for the creation of a new recreation center and library complex.

Announced on Monday, the project will be built on roughly 24 acres near the intersection of Alabama 119 and Thompson Road—one of the city’s most prominent corridors. City officials say the development will also include future retail components and is part of a broader vision to create a centralized civic and community hub.

“We’re so excited to move forward with this plan to breathe new life into one of our most high-profile parts of town and finally have an opportunity to give our residents the recreation center and library they deserve,” said Alabaster Mayor Scott Brakefield. “This will allow us to continue our vision of creating a true city center including the Police Department, City Hall, Senior Center, entertainment options and future recreation center and library.”

Plans for the recreation center include a variety of indoor amenities, such as multiple courts, meeting and event rooms, a fitness area, and an indoor walking track. Outside, the facility will feature a swimming pool and splash pad to enhance its appeal for families and residents of all ages.

The upcoming library will significantly expand public resources. Nearly three times the size of the current library, the new space will allow for larger collections, more programming, and expanded accommodations for community events and gatherings.

To support the development, infrastructure improvements are being made to the nearby Alabama 119-Thompson Road intersection. These include a new right-turn lane and upgraded traffic signals to help manage flow around the future site. City officials also highlighted that parking capacity has been carefully considered and will be “ample” to accommodate visitors.

This latest investment adds to several recent projects in the Siluria Mill District, including upgrades to Larry Simmons Stadium and Jim “Peanut” Davenport baseball field, the Senior Center expansion, and the new Alabaster Police Department and amphitheater.
