Honolulu's light rail system is moving forward at a rapid pace! Tutor Perini Corporation has just secured a massive $1.66 billion contract to build the City Center Guideway and Stations Project. This is a key piece of the overall 19-mile light rail system that's currently under construction.
So, what does this mean for Honolulu residents? Well, Tutor Perini will be responsible for constructing six new rail stations and approximately three miles of elevated track right in the heart of the city. They've partnered with Parsons Corporation to design this section of the system.
The plan is to start construction in the second half of 2025, and they're aiming to have it finished by 2030. Ronald Tutor, the CEO of Tutor Perini Corporation, is excited about the project. He says his company has a lot of experience building light rail systems in other cities, so they're confident they can deliver a great product for Honolulu.
Speaking of the overall project, it's actually being built in three stages. The first stage is already complete, and it runs from East Kapolei to Aloha Stadium. The second stage is almost done, and it includes stations at places like Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and the airport.
Tutor Perini Corporation's work is part of the third stage, which will connect the city center to the rest of the system. Before they can start building the tracks, they need to move some utilities and make some road improvements.
