Top of the List: Silicon Valley-based Contractors Lead the List of the Bay Area’s Biggest

Level 10 Construction

When it comes to the Bay Area’s biggest contractors, Silicon Valley is well represented.

A Valley firm topped the latest Greater Bay Area general contractors List, which ranks companies based on their at-risk general contracting revenue in the entire Bay Area from the prior year. What’s more, a majority of the top 10 on the List are based south of the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.

Coming in no. 1 was Devcon Construction Inc. The Milpitas-based contractor, which counts the Sobrato Campus For Discovery And Innovation (STEM) at Santa Clara University among its recent local projects, had $1.81 billion in at-risk revenue in the region in 2021. Devcon remained in the top spot despite a 7.7% decline in revenue from the prior year.

While a San Francisco firm and a Concord one snagged the no. 2 and no. 3 spots, respectively, Silicon Valley companies captured the fourth through six places on the List.

Novo Construction Inc. moved up a spot to fourth, despite seeing an 8.1% drop in revenue from 2020 to 2021. The Menlo Park firm did so because the company previously ranked fourth — DPR Construction — saw its own at-risk revenue fall 32.4% over the same period. Thanks to that decline, Redwood City-based DPR dropped to no. 5 on this year’s list.

Meanwhile, Level 10 Construction took the sixth spot, jumping two places from last year’s List. The Sunnyvale contractor, which is building two projects for Jay Paul Co. in Downtown San Jose — CityView Plaza and 200 Park — saw its at-risk revenue rise 5% year-over-year.

Devcon took the top spot

Here are the top 5 ranked contractors that are based in Silicon Valley, along with their home city, at-risk Bay Area revenue from last year and their overall rank on the Greater Bay Area List:

  1. Devcon Construction Inc., Milpitas, $1.81 billion, 1st
  2. Novo Construction Inc., Menlo Park, $707.17 million, 4th
  3. DPR Construction, Redwood City, $689.45 million, 5th
  4. Level 10 Construction, Sunnyvale, $678.92 million, 6th
  5. XL Construction, Milpitas, $556.68 million, 8th

Incidentally, those five top firms took many of the same spots on our List of largest general contractors in Silicon Valley, which is based on firms’ at-risk revenue in Silicon Valley proper, rather than Bay Area-wide.

Ahavah Revis and Ari Mahrer of the San Francisco Business Times conducted the research for the Greater Bay Area general contractors List, obtaining data from the construction companies themselves and from prior Business Journal research. The Business Journal and the Business Times define the Greater Bay Area as the region including Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano and Sonoma counties.

Several companies ranked last year did not respond to requests for updated information. Swenson and Gilbane Building Co., which ranked no. 38 and 39, respectively on the 2021 Greater Bay Area general contractors List, declined to participate.

We put together many of our Lists from data we collect through emailed surveys. We are currently conducting surveys for our Lists of Bay Area Wineries, Bay Area Breweries and Women-Owned Businesses.
