Suffolk Recognized as a Top Ten Green Contractor in the Nation for the Second Straight Year

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Suffolk, a leading real estate and construction firm, has been named one of the top 10 green contractors in the United States, ranking eighth on Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine’s 2024 list of the “Top 100 Green Building Contractors.” This marks the second consecutive year Suffolk has achieved this distinction, reflecting its commitment to sustainable building practices and innovations.

With over $3.36 billion in green design revenue for 2023, which accounts for 61 percent of the company’s total revenue, Suffolk continues to push the boundaries of environmentally responsible construction. The firm’s standout project, the Winthrop Center, is the fourth tallest building in Boston and holds the title of the largest Passive House office building in the world. This award-winning project has set a new standard for sustainable construction, earning Suffolk a Top New England Project Award from Engineering News-Record and a National Outstanding Achievement Award from the Construction Management Association of America

“Moving up to eighth on the Top 100 Green Building Contractors is a significant accomplishment for Suffolk and our sustainability and project teams,” said Senior Director Steven Burke. “Green building remains a priority across all sectors, with an increasing diversity of programs and targets utilized by building owners. The time is right for forward-thinking clients to partner with a general contractor that embraces innovation to elevate industry expectations as we collectively move toward decarbonizing the built environment.”

Suffolk's dedicated in-house Sustainability team, led by Burke and Director Michael Swenson, works closely with clients throughout all stages of the building lifecycle—from design and preconstruction to construction and post-completion. By utilizing advanced technology, data, and artificial intelligence, Suffolk successfully delivers complex projects that incorporate sustainable methods in a cost-effective manner.

To date, Suffolk has completed over 150 projects valued at more than $15 billion that are LEED-certified, adhering to the globally recognized standards for green building design, construction, and operation. The company strives to integrate sustainability at every phase of a project, from planning and material selection to energy efficiency in building operations.

Among Suffolk's notable projects are the Winthrop Center, Boston University Center for Computing and Data Sciences (the largest fossil fuel-free building in New England), and Yahoo's BF2 Phase Three data centers, which utilize significantly less energy and water than the industry average. Additionally, the firm is involved in the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport Electric Utility Plant (eCUP), which aims to become the first carbon-neutral central plant in aviation in the Americas.
