Skanska Celebrates Major Construction Milestone for $34.69M East Tampa Recreation Complex at Fair Oaks
TAMPA, FL – Skanska, one of the leading construction firms in the U.S., has successfully completed the installation of 270 structural frame and wall pre-cast elements for the $34.69 million redevelopment and expansion of the East Tampa Recreation Complex at Fair Oaks Park. This achievement marks the project's topping out phase. Scheduled for completion by Spring 2026, the transformed 10.25-acre complex will serve as a vibrant hub for community engagement and recreation, offering a wide range of indoor and outdoor amenities, including a senior center, athletic field, exercise trail, and a recreation center powered by more than 500 solar panels.
As the design-build lead, Skanska is partnering with architecture firms Howard + Associates and Convergence Design to bring the vision to life. Skanska's scope involves constructing a 33,055-square-foot recreation center that will provide flexible spaces for indoor programs and activities. The design thoughtfully integrates existing community assets, such as the Herbert D. Carrington Sr. Community Lake, and incorporates adjacent properties into a pedestrian-friendly campus that fosters community interaction. The new Youth & Senior Center will be significantly larger, expanding to five times the size of the former community facility, and will greatly enhance its ability to serve the local population.
“Our team takes immense pride in constructing this multi-functional recreational complex, which will serve as a new community cornerstone for Tampa Bay and its surrounding neighborhoods,” said Tracy Hunt, executive vice president and general manager for Skanska’s Florida building operations. This community-centric hub will further enhance wellness initiatives, athletic programs, and offerings for both children and seniors in East Tampa.”
Designed to enhance both physical activity and community cohesion, the complex will feature 1.5 miles of walking trails, a youth athletic field, two basketball courts, and two pickleball courts. The main building will include dedicated spaces for music, art, and billiards, along with three multi-purpose rooms. A computer lab will provide access to technology resources for all ages, and dance studios, fitness facilities, a full-size gymnasium, and a weight room will further support health and wellness initiatives. Additionally, the ADA-compliant playground and vibrant splash pad, complete with 18 lighted nozzles and a tree fountain, will offer a safe and engaging space for children.
Skanska's legacy of creating transformative public spaces in Florida is evident in its work across the region, including the renovation and expansion of the Tampa Convention Center, the development of Coachman Park in Downtown Clearwater, the award-winning St. Petersburg Pier and Pier Approach, and Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park in Tampa. The East Tampa Recreation Complex is the latest example of Skanska’s commitment to building innovative spaces that foster community and improve quality of life.
