DALLAS, June 5, 2024—Jacobs (NYSE), a global leader in professional services, has been chosen by the City of Omaha, Nebraska, to pioneer a cutting-edge real-time control decision support system for its wastewater collection network.
This initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) through innovative digital solutions.
Under the agreement, Jacobs will leverage its expertise in design services and data solutions to implement a strategy that optimizes existing infrastructure utilization while mitigating environmental impacts.
Central to this effort is the deployment of Jacobs' Digital OneWater solution, Aqua DNA, which integrates data from Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and sensors to monitor crucial system parameters such as flow rates and rainfall. This data will be analyzed using advanced hydraulic modeling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to provide real-time insights.
Ron Williams, Senior Vice President at Jacobs, commented, "Having previously managed Omaha's $2 billion CSO Program, Jacobs is uniquely positioned to support the city's vision of a smart sewer system. Our digital tools will facilitate proactive management of wastewater flows, enhancing operational efficiency and environmental stewardship aligned with Omaha's Long Term Control Plan."
The scope of the contract includes designing three capital projects under the Long Term Control Plan, focusing on enhancing control structures to manage flows dynamically. Jacobs will evaluate various control strategies using Aqua DNA to minimize overflows and bolster system resilience. Additionally, Jacobs will implement cybersecurity measures to safeguard communication networks and SCADA systems.
"This project marks a significant step forward in optimizing our wastewater infrastructure," said Jim Theiler, Assistant Public Works Director for the City of Omaha. "Jacobs' digital solutions will empower us to deliver sustainable improvements that benefit both our community and the environment."
With a commitment to advancing cities and environmental resilience, Jacobs continues to innovate across sectors, including infrastructure, environmental solutions, and digital transformation. The company's comprehensive approach to solving complex challenges underscores its dedication to creating a more sustainable future.
