Hensel Phelps Wins Major Contract for Second Target Station at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Greeley, CO – Hensel Phelps, a construction management and general contracting firm headquartered in Greeley, Colorado, has been selected to lead the construction of the second target station project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), according to a Department of Energy (DOE) press release.
The project, valued between $1.8 billion and $3 billion, represents a significant investment in expanding the nation's research capabilities. The new facility will complement the existing first target station, significantly enhancing ORNL's ability to conduct groundbreaking research across physical and biological sciences.
Focus on Sustainability and Workforce
The project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities. Hensel Phelps anticipates collaborating with over 30 subcontractors and employing more than 350 skilled laborers during peak construction periods over the next eight years.
The new facility will be constructed adhering to the DOE's High Performance Sustainable Building Guiding Principles. These principles emphasize:
- Integrated Design Practices
- Optimized Energy Efficiency
- Water Conservation Strategies
- Improved Indoor Air Quality
- Environmentally Friendly Building Materials
- Enhanced Building Resilience
Project Phases and Leadership
The project will be delivered under a construction management/general contractor (CM/GC) contract, encompassing both preconstruction and construction phases. Currently, Hensel Phelps is in the preconstruction phase, focusing on design reviews, market analysis, value engineering, and developing a comprehensive project schedule.
This significant win comes amidst a leadership transition for Hensel Phelps. In January 2024, Brad Jeanneret was appointed as the company's new President and COO.
