Harckham Secures $794K for Cortlandt Sewer Project

Cortlandt, NY – New York State Senator Pete Harckham revealed today that the Town of Cortlandt will be receiving $794,750 in state funding for the planning, design, and construction of a new pump station and force main aimed at serving the Furnace Brook Sewer District.

“For municipalities faced with infrastructure projects of this scale, it is crucial for the state to assist in covering the costs,” Harckham stated. “The Town of Cortlandt is committed to responsible, environmentally conscious development with this new sewer line. This funding will not only benefit homeowners but will also save taxpayers money. I am proud to have secured significant funding for this important project.”

Town Supervisor Dr. Richard Becker also expressed gratitude for the state’s support: “The Town of Cortlandt is grateful for the assistance of Senator Peter Harckham in obtaining the State Environmental Facilities Corporation grant to complete the Furnace Brook Sewer District,” Becker said. “As local septic systems reach the end of their lifespan, this sewer system provides a sustainable solution for homeowners in the district, helping them stay in their homes while increasing property values.”

The extensive project will span a section of Furnace Woods Road, extending to Maple Avenue, then continuing along Lafayette Avenue, reaching up to Route 202. The new infrastructure aims to significantly improve the town’s waste management capacity and ensure long-term environmental sustainability.

Project Overview and Design

The Sewer District project, which has been designed by engineering firm Woodard and Curran, is being driven forward by the Town of Cortlandt’s Department of Technical Services. Construction work on the project is scheduled to begin this month, with completion expected by the end of the year. The project will be carried out in phases, ensuring minimal disruption to residents while maintaining momentum toward meeting environmental standards.

In addition to the state funding, the project has also been supplemented by several other grants secured by the town. These combined funds ensure that the sewer project will be completed without overly burdening local taxpayers.

Part of State-Wide Initiative for Water Infrastructure Improvement

Harckham noted that the $794,750 allocated to Cortlandt is part of a broader initiative to enhance water infrastructure across New York State. The funding is part of a larger $340 million investment announced by Governor Kathy Hochul through the Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC) to help municipalities improve water and wastewater systems. These critical investments aim to safeguard public health, protect the environment, and support local economies by making infrastructure projects more affordable and sustainable.

“Governor Hochul’s investments are part of our ongoing efforts to address the challenges of aging infrastructure, ensuring that our communities have access to safe, clean water while creating economic opportunities,” Harckham explained. “The funding not only helps to modernize our systems but also reduces the financial burden on residents by ensuring more manageable costs for necessary improvements.”

Importance of Improved Wastewater Infrastructure

The upgrade to Cortlandt’s sewer system is part of a larger trend in New York, where outdated septic systems and water infrastructure need to be replaced with more modern solutions. Aging infrastructure, particularly septic systems in rural and suburban areas, can lead to environmental damage and costly repairs. The Furnace Brook Sewer District project is designed to provide a sustainable alternative, addressing the environmental needs of the area while supporting the growth and development of the town.

The funding will allow Cortlandt to improve wastewater treatment systems, ensuring that homes in the area are connected to a more reliable and environmentally friendly sewage treatment network. This new infrastructure will help prevent contamination of local waterways, protect public health, and offer long-term economic benefits for residents and businesses alike.

Community Impact and Economic Benefits

The new sewer system is expected to bring a range of economic and environmental benefits to the community. The addition of the sewer line will not only improve sanitation and reduce the risk of pollution but will also make properties in the Furnace Brook area more attractive to potential buyers. As the septic systems age, homeowners could have faced challenges in maintaining their properties or selling them. The new sewer system offers a practical solution, helping to stabilize property values and ensure the area remains a desirable place to live.

“This project is more than just infrastructure; it’s about supporting the community’s future,” Harckham emphasized. “The new sewer system will make homes more marketable, which is good for homeowners and strengthens the local economy.”

A Vision for a Sustainable Future

The Furnace Brook Sewer District project is part of a long-term vision for sustainable development in the region. With the growth of suburban areas, Cortlandt is working to ensure that its infrastructure keeps up with demand while remaining environmentally responsible. The project’s design incorporates modern technology and best practices in wastewater management to ensure its longevity and minimize the environmental footprint.

In the coming months, the town will work closely with local contractors, residents, and environmental groups to ensure that the project meets all necessary regulations and contributes positively to the community. As construction progresses, Cortlandt aims to demonstrate how municipalities can balance development with environmental stewardship, providing a model for other communities in New York State.

Looking Ahead: Securing Further Investments for the Future

Looking toward the future, Harckham is committed to continuing his efforts to secure additional funding for water and wastewater projects across his district. As communities continue to face the impacts of aging infrastructure, the need for investments in clean water and sewer systems will only grow. Harckham remains dedicated to ensuring that New York State provides the necessary resources to help communities like Cortlandt modernize their infrastructure, improve public health, and support local economic growth.

Conclusion

The funding for Cortlandt’s Sewer Project is a significant step in improving the town's infrastructure, protecting the environment, and supporting residents’ quality of life. With construction set to begin this month, the project promises to provide long-lasting benefits for homeowners, the community, and the local economy. Harckham’s commitment to securing essential funding for water infrastructure projects ensures that Cortlandt and other municipalities can continue to thrive while addressing the challenges posed by outdated systems.
