Construction is set to begin next year on Virginia Tech’s West Falls Church campus redevelopment, with HITT Contracting breaking ground on its new headquarters at the 7.41-acre Northern Virginia Center in Idylwood. The official groundbreaking ceremony will take place on January 23. According to Jaclyn Randolph, senior communications manager at HITT Contracting, the construction firm plans to start work in January.
Details regarding construction phases, truck routes, and other updates will be shared during a community meeting at Haycock Elementary School on January 17, from 7-9 p.m.
The project, which has been in development since 2019, will feature a six-story headquarters building for HITT, offering 270,000 square feet of space. This includes 40,000 square feet for the Coalition for Smart Construction, leased by Virginia Tech. The facility will accommodate more than 900 employees with modern amenities, including a full-service conference center, wellness facilities, and collaborative work zones designed to support neurodivergent workstyles. The building will be powered by a 100,000-square-foot solar panel array, with the offices set to open in early 2027.
In addition to HITT’s headquarters, the development will include a 13-story, 440-unit apartment building, up to 18,000 square feet of retail, and 55,000 square feet of urban parks. This project is part of a larger revitalization plan approved by Fairfax County in 2021 for over 30 acres around the West Falls Church Metro Station, which will include residential, commercial, and office spaces. The overall development will feature 810 multifamily units, 85 townhouses, and a 110,000-square-foot office building.
While the timeline for the broader redevelopment is still pending, the developments will be connected through a new West Falls Station Blvd, extending from Route 7 to the West Falls area in Falls Church City. West Falls, the largest development in the city’s history, has already welcomed new residents and began construction on a senior living community earlier this month.
