Trump Nominates Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of Labor
On Friday evening, President-elect Donald Trump announced his nomination of Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.) for Secretary of Labor. Chavez-DeRemer, who served one term in Congress, recently lost her re-election bid to Democrat Janelle Bynum. Trump expressed enthusiasm about working with Chavez-DeRemer, emphasizing goals such as expanding apprenticeships, raising wages, and enhancing working conditions across the nation.
Teamsters President Sean O’Brien offered his support for Chavez-DeRemer, highlighting her previous commitment to “listen to workers and find common ground to protect and respect labor in America.”
Chavez-DeRemer’s nomination is part of a series of cabinet picks announced by the president-elect, including TV celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz for administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, WWE co-founder Linda McMahon as education secretary, and former U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wisc.) as transportation secretary.
Earlier, G. Roger King, senior labor and employment counsel for the HR Policy Association, had mentioned that Johnny C. Taylor Jr., president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management, was also considered for the Department of Labor position.
