South Loop Project Progresses with Key Updates and Funding Boost

The South Loop Park project has made significant strides with three major developments this week. These include a transformative $31.4 million investment from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the approval of Clarkson Construction and JE Dunn’s contract for Construction Management/General Contractor (CM/GC), and the launch of pre-construction services to keep the project on track for its 2025 construction start.

Historic Funding Boost for Infrastructure Improvements

The South Loop project secured a major funding boost from MoDOT’s Cost Share Program, which supports essential state highway and bridge projects. On December 4, 2024, the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission approved a $31.4 million contribution to match the City of Kansas City’s prior investment, totaling $62.8 million for infrastructure upgrades along Interstate 670 (I-670). These enhancements include replacing aging infrastructure, such as retaining walls, drainage systems, pavement, and the Walnut Street Bridge, which will aid in the construction of the South Loop Park and improve the city’s downtown transportation network.

"In just two years, the South Loop Lid project has gone from an ambitious idea to a game-changing initiative that will unify several downtown communities like never before," said Mayor Quinton Lucas. "We are grateful for the Missouri Department of Transportation and all our partners for their continued support."

A Transformative Space for Kansas City

The 5.5-acre South Loop Park will redefine Kansas City's public space with lush gardens, inclusive play areas, entertainment venues, and year-round local business markets. Slated for construction in early 2025, the park will serve as a vibrant hub for community engagement, recreation, and economic development.

“The South Loop is a prime example of how urban development and infrastructure upgrades can be integrated for maximum impact,” stated Councilmember Kevin O'Neill. “This funding will ensure the project enhances both the public space and the transportation infrastructure.”

Pre-Construction Services Underway

With pre-construction services in full swing, the project team is working on refining budgets, finalizing designs, and setting project timelines. This preparation will ensure the South Loop Park is completed on time, with necessary infrastructure improvements seamlessly integrated into the design.

Transforming Public Space and Infrastructure

By upgrading I-670 and creating a world-class park, the South Loop project will provide a safer, more accessible downtown corridor while enhancing connectivity and community engagement. The project is a collaboration between the City of Kansas City, Port KC, and the Downtown Council. For more information, visit the South Loop Project website.
