South Jersey Building Trades Back Steve Sweeney for Governor
Steve Sweeney, former Senate President, has secured the endorsement of the Southern New Jersey Building Trades and Construction Council in his campaign for the Democratic nomination for governor of New Jersey.
“Steve Sweeney is not only a dedicated union ironworker; he is a true brother in labor,” said Dan Costner, the council president. “No candidate is better positioned to advocate for the building trades than one of our own.”
Sweeney has been a proud member of the Ironworkers Local 399 since 1980 and serves as the general vice president of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Iron Workers. His candidacy is already supported by the New Jersey Building Trades and Construction Council.
“It’s no surprise why labor is coming out to support him. Steve Sweeney has been with working people every step of the way because he is one of them,” said Kerry Lyon, Sweeney’s spokesman. “As Governor, he will lower costs, create good-paying union jobs, and continue to fight for working families and their values as New Jersey’s next governor.”
Sweeney is among the two labor leaders vying for the gubernatorial nomination. Sean Spiller, the president of the New Jersey Education Association, is also running for the Democratic ticket.
