Skanska Wins $72M Renovation Contract for NKU Science Center

Caroline Raffetto

Skanska, a leading construction and project development company, has secured a $72 million (Skr780 million) contract with Northern Kentucky University (NKU) for a significant campus renovation project. This contract will focus on the expansion of the Dorothy Westerman Herrmann Science Center, with the goal of enhancing NKU's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs.

The renovation involves adding a new 79,925 square-foot wing to the existing science center. This additional space will centralize various academic programs at NKU, including Biological Sciences, Physics, Geology & Engineering Technology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Engineering Technology. The project will also include minor upgrades and renovations to the current science center.

Skanska's work on the project will begin with site preparations, which began in October 2024, and construction is expected to start in the first quarter of 2025. The completion of the expansion is scheduled for August 2027. The $72 million contract will be included in Skanska’s Q1 2025 order bookings.

Skanska, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, has been a major player in the construction industry, with revenues of Skr177 billion in 2024. The company operates in select markets in the Nordics, Europe, and the US, employing approximately 26,300 people globally.

In addition to this contract, Skanska also secured two more projects earlier this month—one in the US and the other in Norway. Last month, the company was appointed by Tata Steel to provide civil and structural design and project management services for the steel giant's electric arc furnace project at Port Talbot in the UK.

Skanska's involvement in these major projects reflects its continued growth and expertise in both domestic and international markets, further solidifying its reputation in the construction sector.

"We are proud to partner with Northern Kentucky University on this exciting campus renovation project," said Skanska's regional manager. "This expansion will be a key part of NKU's commitment to strengthening STEM education, and we are thrilled to contribute to this important initiative."
