TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Ohio Building, currently known for hosting large events and celebrations, is preparing for a significant transformation in the upcoming year. Owners aim to convert the venue into a restaurant, offering the public a more everyday experience while continuing to host special events.

While the exterior may resemble a typical office building, the interior tells a different story. The Ohio Building has a rich history, having served as a hotel, winery, and now as an event center and Airbnb. Owner Carrie Clarke believes the space should be more accessible to the community. “It’s really special to feel that support from the community,” Clarke shared.

With the help of a small business grant supported by United Way and the city of Terre Haute, the owners plan to further enhance the venue. The catering space and banquet hall will be transformed into a commercial kitchen, with the hall eventually becoming a full-fledged restaurant.

While weddings are still booked through November 2025, construction is scheduled to begin after the last reservation. Clarke explained, “Once the conversion starts, I think the upstairs will definitely still be an option. It’s just gonna be we’ll have to play it by ear with the first floor.”

The owners are committed to keeping the space functional during construction, with Airbnb spaces still available. Weddings scheduled during the renovation will take place in the upstairs ballroom. “We definitely want to try to accommodate as many of those things as possible still in the future,” said Clarke. “It’s about finding a balance between sharing more food experiences with people downtown and continuing to have those special experiences.”

Clarke hopes the restaurant will be fully operational by summer 2026.
