New Program Supporting Minority, Veteran, and Women Construction Entrepreneurs Now Accepting Applications
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — In a significant move to promote diversity and growth in Indianapolis’ construction industry, two leading organizations have teamed up to launch a new business development initiative. The “Empowering Diverse Contractors for Growth & Success” program is now open for registration, aimed at helping minority, veteran, and women-owned businesses secure larger construction contracts.
Historically, minorities, veterans, and women have faced numerous obstacles when trying to land substantial construction contracts in the city. This new initiative, funded by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation’s (IEDC) Community Collaboration Fund, is designed to level the playing field by providing underrepresented entrepreneurs with vital resources and guidance.
One of the program's driving forces is Akilah Darden, founder of The Darden Group LLC. Founded in January 2020, The Darden Group was created to promote diversity within the construction sector. The company offers executive construction management services, helping leadership teams strategize, streamline processes, and manage large-scale commercial projects.
Darden, having faced the industry’s challenges herself, took the initiative to develop the skills necessary for construction management and created a Management Masterclass to mentor others. She places a strong emphasis on mentorship, especially for young people, to cultivate the next generation of construction leaders.
The “Empowering Diverse Contractors for Growth & Success” program marks a major step forward in creating a more inclusive and thriving construction environment in Indianapolis.
Entrepreneurs interested in joining the program can register for an information session or apply directly for the opportunity. The following introductory Zoom meetings are available:
