Meta's Massive Data Center Investment in Wyoming

Caroline Raffetto

Tech giant Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, is making a significant investment in Wyoming. They're building a new data center in Cheyenne, which will be their 21st in the United States and 25th globally.

Fortis Construction, based in Portland, Oregon, is leading the construction of this massive 715,000-square-foot campus. At its peak, construction will employ around 1,000 workers.

Located on 960 acres at the High Plains Business Park, this data center is expected to be a major economic boost for the area. It will generate millions in tax revenue through property taxes, fees, and other indirect sources.

Meta chose Wyoming for its excellent infrastructure, energy resources, talented workforce, and supportive community. Brad Davis, Meta's director of data center community and economic development, expressed gratitude to all the partners who made this project possible.

To ensure a sustainable energy supply, Meta will work with Black Hills Energy to add renewable resources to the grid. They're also committed to supporting local water initiatives, such as the Laramie County Conservation District's Crow Creek restoration project.

Once completed, the data center aims to achieve LEED Gold certification, demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Governor Mark Gordon expressed his enthusiasm for this project, highlighting Wyoming's business-friendly climate and its focus on innovation and workforce development.

This is just the latest in a series of data center investments by Meta. Since January, they've announced three other $800 million data centers in Alabama, Minnesota, and Indiana.
