Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center Nears Completion

Caroline Raffetto

The Center for Cancer Discovery at the Medical College of Wisconsin is nearing completion, with occupancy expected in early 2025. The 161,000-square-foot research facility, located on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus in Wauwatosa, is set to become the first cancer-focused research center in eastern Wisconsin.

“This facility is a catalyst for discovery that will allow scientists to tackle the biggest challenges in cancer biology, expand our already robust clinical trials portfolio, and enable us to offer more patients access to groundbreaking cancer treatments,” said Gustavo Leone, Director of the MCW Cancer Center.

The project broke ground in September 2022, with a significant $15 million grant from the State Building Commission. Mortenson Construction is overseeing the build, with CannonDesign providing architectural services. The total cost of the project is approximately $153 million.

The Center for Cancer Discovery will house all of MCW's Cancer Center's research programs under one roof. The building’s open-concept design is centered on fostering collaboration among cancer researchers, physician-scientists, and community partners. Currently, MCW’s clinical partners offer more than 220 active cancer clinical trials, the most in Wisconsin.

In addition to research space, the CCD will include areas for scientists to develop startups focused on advancing cancer treatments. The facility will feature approximately 90 laboratories dedicated to cancer research, housing some of the world’s leading scientists in the field.

Another significant project at the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center is the Forensic Science and Protective Medicine Facility. Led by C.D. Smith Construction, the facility will serve as the new home for the Milwaukee Crime Lab, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office, the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management, and an organ and tissue center for Versiti Wisconsin.

The MCW Center for Cancer Discovery is poised to be a transformative hub for cancer research and clinical care in the region. The facility’s design prioritizes flexibility and future growth, enabling it to adapt to new cancer research and treatment needs as they evolve. The state-of-the-art research environment is expected to make significant strides in the ongoing fight against cancer, contributing to both local and global advancements in treatment.

Impact on Local Communities

With its focus on collaborative research, the center is expected to have a profound impact on both the medical community and the surrounding communities. By offering cutting-edge facilities and access to the latest cancer treatments and clinical trials, the center will help bridge the gap between laboratory research and real-world applications, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Economic and Workforce Benefits

The development of this facility also brings economic benefits to the region, creating jobs and providing opportunities for the workforce. Additionally, the collaborative space is designed to foster innovation, making it an attractive location for both local and international talent.
