McCarthy Building Cos. has completed the $650 million Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital campus, marking its ninth hospital project in the greater Houston area, according to a March 31 news release. The St. Louis-based general contractor leveraged cutting-edge technology, including LIDAR scanning, building information modeling (BIM), and 3D modeling, to streamline project delivery and finish ahead of schedule.

Project Overview

The state-of-the-art 570,000-square-foot hospital features seven stories, 100 licensed beds, nine operating rooms, and nine imaging modalities. It also houses an emergency department, a critical care unit, and a birthing center.

The project extends beyond the hospital itself, incorporating two six-story medical office buildings (MOBs) totaling 320,000 square feet. According to the release, Medical Office Building One includes a dedicated cancer center with a breast care unit, infusion center, pharmacy area, and a bridge connector to the main hospital. Meanwhile, Medical Office Building Two focuses on sports medicine, orthopedics, and physical therapy.

Both MOBs opened to the public a year ahead of the hospital’s full completion.

Early Engagement and Advanced Construction Methods

McCarthy began work in February 2022, starting with the demolition of 11 buildings that previously occupied the site, once home to Sysco Corp. Houston Methodist engaged McCarthy early in the process, enabling the firm to collaborate with Washington, D.C.-based Page Southerland Page and other design partners before finalizing plans.

“As a result, McCarthy delivered each of the campus buildings earlier than scheduled,” the company stated in the release.

McCarthy’s use of BIM, prefabrication, LIDAR scanning, and 3D modeling played a key role in maintaining efficiency. The advanced mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems integration streamlined workflows and minimized conflicts during construction.

A Major Milestone for Houston Healthcare

The completion of Houston Methodist Cypress represents a major expansion of healthcare services in Northwest Houston. The campus will provide cutting-edge treatment options, advanced surgical capabilities, and specialized medical care to a rapidly growing population.

With the project’s early completion, McCarthy continues to solidify its reputation as a leading healthcare builder, delivering complex hospital campuses with precision and efficiency.
