The City of Malibu has officially approved the construction of a $4.1 million skate park, with plans to open the facility later this year. This new park will become a key recreational space for the city, blending action sports with community building and enhancing Malibu's commitment to providing high-quality public amenities.
The skate park will span 12,500 square feet and is being designed by California Skateparks, an industry leader known for creating world-class skateboarding venues. The firm has designed facilities for both professional competitions and local communities, making them a perfect fit for Malibu's vision. The design process involved valuable input from the local community, with surveys conducted in 2020 and 2021, alongside public meetings that helped shape the park’s features and layout.

While the park has yet to be named, the city will soon open a public submission process for name ideas, encouraging community participation in the park's identity.
Construction will be handled by C.S. Legacy Construction, a company well-regarded for its work on similar projects. The park’s layout will include features such as rails, stairs, quarter pipes, spines, waterfalls, and banks. These elements are designed to cater to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced skaters, ensuring the park will be a welcoming space for everyone.
"This skate park is more than just a recreational facility — it will be a gathering place that will foster community, promote healthy lifestyles and embrace Malibu's deep-rooted skate culture," said Mayor Doug Stewart in a statement. "We look forward to watching generations of skaters enjoy this incredible new space."
The new park is expected to be completed by the fall, with construction set to begin in April. Until then, the temporary skate park located at Malibu Bluffs Park will remain open, allowing skaters to continue enjoying the sport during the construction phase.
In addition to serving as a recreational space for skateboarders, the park is part of a larger initiative by the city to promote outdoor activities and create spaces that foster a sense of community. The design reflects Malibu's deep connection to its active lifestyle and vibrant skate culture. Malibu has long been known for its scenic beauty, but the city’s commitment to offering top-tier recreational facilities for its residents is equally important.
“The skate park will not only attract local skaters but also visitors from surrounding areas, contributing to Malibu’s reputation as a center for outdoor sports,” said Parks and Recreation Director, Mary Winters. “We’re excited to offer a space where kids, teens, and adults can all come together to experience the thrill of skating in a safe and welcoming environment.”
As construction begins, city officials are already planning programs and events to engage the community once the park opens. These might include skateboarding lessons, competitions, and even collaborations with local schools to introduce youth to skateboarding.
Beyond recreation, the park will serve as a cultural hub, with local skateboarding legends and influencers potentially being invited to host events or workshops. This will help cement Malibu’s status as a cornerstone of skate culture in California. The skate park will likely host regional competitions and could even become a popular location for international events, further showcasing Malibu’s commitment to action sports.
Residents can stay updated on the skate park's development and find more information about upcoming events and opportunities to get involved via the city’s official website. As the park nears completion, Malibu is poised to offer a space that embodies both its vibrant culture and its focus on wellness, recreation, and community engagement.
