Caroline Raffetto

Hensel Phelps recently participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the New Terminal Project at John Glenn Columbus International Airport. The event was attended by Columbus Regional Airport Authority (CRAA), state, local, federal officials, and community members.

This milestone marks the beginning of Hensel Phelps' partnership with CRAA and their entry into the Ohio market. Hensel Phelps is collaborating with Columbus-based contractor Elford for preconstruction and construction services on the project.

The new terminal, designed by Gensler and Moody Nolan, will replace the existing facility, originally opened in 1958. The 1,000,000 SF terminal is designed to accommodate over 13 million passengers annually, enhancing service capacity and offering a modern gateway to the growing Central-Ohio region. Once completed, the existing terminal will be demolished to allow for further expansion.

Regional Vice President David Brooke and Chief Administrative Officer Matt McCaulley from Hensel Phelps attended the ceremony.

"We’re proud to be part of this exciting project and to support the Columbus Regional Airport Authority’s vision for a new, state-of-the-art terminal," said David Brooke. "We are excited to see the team’s integration into the Columbus community and the lasting relationships being built with our partners."

Matt McCaulley added, "We are truly honored to partner with CRAA on this landmark project. Our collaboration with Elford, with its strong local history, will maximize benefits to local businesses and the community."

The new terminal will streamline passenger movement with improved security processes, including a centralized checkpoint and pedestrian bridges linking the ground transportation center and parking garage. Passengers will also enjoy a marketplace featuring local food and beverage options, alongside enhanced amenities such as sensory rooms, family restrooms, and pet relief areas.

Sustainability is also a priority, with features like energy-efficient smart glass, LED fixtures, and 250 electric vehicle charging stations to accommodate growing demand.

This project promises to elevate the travel experience at John Glenn Columbus International Airport, making it a more efficient, accessible, and sustainable hub for passengers.
