GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Developers and city officials in Grand Island are advancing plans for the voter-approved Good Life District, a transformative project expected to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

A spokesperson announced Thursday that stakeholders have been collaborating on a master plan for the district, which will be presented to the city council for review on January 28. Following additional public board meetings, construction is scheduled to begin in 2025.

In August, nearly two-thirds of Grand Island voters supported the creation of an economic development program tied to the district. The program ensures sales made within the district will only incur half the typical state sales tax, with the city implementing a replacement tax to fund infrastructure improvements.

“The Good Life District designation is the largest investment the State of Nebraska has ever made in our community,” said Mary Berlie, president of the Grand Island Area Economic Development Corporation and Grand Island Chamber of Commerce. “This funding ensures that we can move quickly from planning to action, allowing us to capitalize on new, transformational opportunities within the Good Life District.”

The district’s master plan is being developed by the city, Woodsonia, and architectural firm Confluence. It includes commercial, mixed-use, and school spaces, along with land for multi-family housing. Key features also include a sports complex, fieldhouse, and an aquatic community center.

“The speed at which we are moving shows how eager all involved parties are in seeing growth in Grand Island,” said Mayor Roger Steele. “From the master planning process to the first shovel breaking ground within the district’s boundaries, 2025 could be a historic year for our city.”

Construction is expected to begin later this year, paving the way for a brighter future for Grand Island.
