Florida to Unveil New Howard Frankland Bridge with Bike and Pedestrian Path

After more than four years of construction, the highly anticipated new Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa, Florida, is set to open, providing much-needed relief to local commuters. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is scheduled to hold a grand opening ceremony at 10 a.m. on March 24, with a major traffic switch planned for Monday night into Tuesday.
The Howard Frankland Bridge, named in honor of Tampa businessman Howard Frankland, was originally opened in 1960 as a vital connector between Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. At the time, it only had four lanes but quickly became the most heavily traveled bridge in the Tampa Bay area. To address the growing traffic demand, FDOT constructed a parallel span in 1990.

In 2017, FDOT launched an $865 million initiative to replace the aging northbound span with a more modern structure. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety for the hundreds of thousands of motorists who rely on the bridge daily. Construction commenced in 2020 and included the installation of more than 3,000 concrete piles, which were used to support 494 footings, 494 columns, and 224 caps across 112 piers.
The newly constructed bridge will feature eight lanes, including four general-use lanes and four tolled express lanes. It will also incorporate a separate pedestrian and bike path, providing a safe and accessible route for non-motorized users. Once completed, the new bridge will function as the southbound lanes for Interstate 275, while the current southbound span will be repurposed as northbound lanes.
While the new bridge is set to open in the coming days, the project is not expected to reach full completion until early 2026. This will coincide with the demolition of the original 1960s-era northbound bridge, a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of the region's transportation infrastructure.
The design of the new bridge incorporates a higher elevation, which is intended to reduce the risk of damage from potential storms. Additionally, the structure features wider concrete barriers, which are meant to protect the bridge from saltwater corrosion and extend its expected lifespan to an impressive 100 years.
The new Howard Frankland Bridge is a critical part of the Tampa Bay area's long-term efforts to modernize and expand its transportation infrastructure. The opening of the bridge marks a major milestone in the region's commitment to addressing the growing demands of both vehicular and non-vehicular traffic.
As the construction of the new bridge draws to a close, FDOT continues to invest in other infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing safety, reducing congestion, and supporting sustainable transportation options. With the expansion of the Howard Frankland Bridge, the region's commuters will soon experience a smoother, more efficient driving experience, while pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from improved connectivity and safety along this major thoroughfare.
This project also highlights the importance of long-term planning and resilience in the face of climate change. The new bridge’s design and materials reflect the region’s proactive approach to minimizing the impacts of severe weather events, ensuring that the bridge can continue to serve the community for generations to come.
Additional Features to Look Forward To
Tolling and Traffic Flow Improvements
The addition of tolled express lanes is aimed at improving traffic flow during peak hours, allowing for faster travel for those who opt to pay for the convenience. These express lanes are expected to provide relief to commuters who regularly experience delays during rush hour.
Environmental Considerations
The project’s design includes several environmentally friendly features, including the protection of nearby ecosystems and wildlife habitats. Careful planning has ensured that construction impacts were minimized, and steps have been taken to reduce runoff and other environmental concerns.
Future Expansion Plans
As part of the broader transportation strategy for the region, FDOT is exploring additional infrastructure projects, including more lanes, advanced technologies for traffic management, and improvements to nearby roads and interchanges to further enhance mobility in the Tampa Bay area.
This highly anticipated project represents a key moment in Tampa’s infrastructure development, significantly enhancing its transportation network and improving the daily commute for thousands of residents and visitors alike. The future of the Howard Frankland Bridge looks promising, offering a modern and resilient route that will serve Tampa Bay for decades to come.
