Florida Introduces Pilot Program to Cut Wind Insurance Costs for Condos
Florida has launched a new initiative aimed at reducing the rising costs of condo living, specifically targeting wind insurance premiums. The state introduced the "My Safe Florida Condo" pilot program, which offers qualifying condominium associations free inspections and grants for wind mitigation improvements. These upgrades are expected to lower wind insurance rates. To qualify for the program, condominium associations must be located within 15 miles of the coastline.
Each association can receive up to $175,000 in grant funding. For every dollar the association contributes, the program will match it with $2 in funding.
The program supports several mitigation efforts, including:
- Installing opening protection on exterior doors, garage doors, windows, and skylights
- Reinforcing connections between roofs and walls
- Strengthening the attachments between the roof and deck
- Adding secondary water resistance to roofs
