Fayetteville and N.C. Labor Dept. to Host Fair Wage Laws Meeting

Caroline Raffetto

The City of Fayetteville’s Purchasing Division, in collaboration with the N.C. Department of Labor, is organizing a public meeting to educate contractors and subcontractors about the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts, as well as compliance with federal prevailing wage requirements. This meeting will offer valuable insights into the laws and regulations surrounding fair wage practices on federally funded construction projects.

Scheduled for March 25, the free public meeting will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Fayetteville Transit Center, located at 505 Franklin Street in downtown Fayetteville. The event is open to all interested parties and aims to provide essential guidance for those working on or planning to work on federally funded projects.

The U.S. Department of Labor enforces the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts, which mandate that contractors and subcontractors working on federally funded or assisted projects exceeding $2,000 must pay workers no less than the locally prevailing wages and fringe benefits for similar work in the area. The goal of this law is to ensure fair compensation for workers and maintain competitive, local labor standards across federally funded projects.

“Understanding the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts is important for contractors looking to succeed in federally funded projects,” said Kimberly Toon, Purchasing Manager for the City of Fayetteville. “This meeting is an opportunity to get the right information and for attendees to ask related questions.”

The session will cover crucial topics such as:

Prevailing Wage Requirements

Contractors will learn about the specific wage rates they are required to pay, ensuring compliance with federal regulations and avoiding penalties.

Certified Payroll Reporting

The session will provide insight into the necessary documentation contractors must submit to report worker wages and hours on federally funded projects.

Legal Compliance

Contractors will be briefed on the legal consequences of failing to meet Davis-Bacon Act requirements and how to navigate common challenges.

Updated Laws and Regulations

The event will offer the latest updates on changes to federal wage laws, ensuring that all attendees are aware of the current rules in place.

Small and Minority-Owned Businesses

Local businesses will receive guidance on how to qualify for and participate in federally funded projects, with an emphasis on supporting small and minority-owned enterprises in the area.

The N.C. Department of Labor’s involvement ensures that the meeting will provide attendees with comprehensive information about the rights and responsibilities of contractors under federal law. The event is an excellent opportunity for local businesses to strengthen their understanding of compliance and enhance their ability to work on federally funded projects.

In addition to providing valuable information on labor laws, the meeting will foster networking opportunities among local contractors, subcontractors, and city officials. By attending, contractors will gain a deeper understanding of how to navigate the complexities of federally funded construction projects while ensuring they meet all required wage and compliance standards.

This public meeting marks an important step toward enhancing the transparency and fairness of construction practices in Fayetteville, particularly in the context of federally funded projects. It will help equip contractors and subcontractors with the necessary knowledge and tools to successfully bid on projects, comply with federal regulations, and contribute to the community's development while ensuring fair pay for workers.
