LOUDONVILLE — The long-awaited new Visitor Center at Mohican State Park is making significant strides, promising to become a key feature at one of Ohio’s most treasured state parks.

Despite winter weather, construction teams are pressing forward with the development, staying on track for an expected grand opening in late 2025. Crews have reached several milestones, with the installation of the trusses nearing completion, which marks an important phase in the overall construction process.

By the end of February, workers anticipate finishing the roofing, which will bring the structure closer to its final form, allowing the next steps of the project to proceed.

“We’re thrilled to see this project moving forward, even through the challenges of winter weather,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz shared. “The new visitor center will serve as a gateway to Mohican State Park, giving visitors an opportunity to learn about the area’s natural beauty while enhancing their overall park experience.”

The new center is strategically located near the park's main entrance, offering a prominent presence that can be seen from the road. The center is nestled alongside the scenic Clear Fork of the Mohican River, within the park’s floodplain, blending the park’s natural landscape with modern design and accessibility.

The visitor center will feature an extended, gently sloped ramp leading to the entrance, surrounded by educational rain gardens and gathering spaces, creating interactive and educational spaces for visitors to learn about the park’s diverse ecosystem and wildlife.

To address potential flooding concerns, landscaping will be incorporated around the grand entrance, ensuring the safety and comfort of visitors. The center will also feature inviting exterior porches, as well as a fireplace, providing a cozy, year-round retreat for park-goers to enjoy.

Designed with a nod to traditional forest lodges, the visitor center will feature olive green siding atop a stone base, designed to reflect the natural stone outcroppings that adorn the park. The addition of shaded porches and stone chimneys will complement the rustic, welcoming atmosphere.

Inside the visitor center, a central exhibit space will serve as the heart of the building, with two wings extending from either side. One wing will house restrooms and a retail area, while the other will be dedicated to staff operations and storage.

Carefully designed entryways at both ends of the building will allow for easy access from the parking lot and nearby campground. In addition, a secure vestibule will offer off-hours access to essential facilities like restrooms and drinking fountains, ensuring visitors can enjoy the park even when the center is closed.

“By providing a central hub for information and recreation, we’re enhancing the experience of those who come to explore Mohican State Park’s diverse trails, waterways, and natural landscapes,” said Mertz. “This center will help visitors connect more deeply with the park’s natural and cultural heritage.”

Mohican State Park, renowned for its rugged beauty and rich history, continues to be a popular destination for a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, paddling, and camping. The addition of the new visitor center will only enhance the experience, making it easier for visitors to connect with the park’s offerings, whether they’re embarking on a long hike or relaxing by the river.

This project has been developed in partnership with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, further demonstrating the state’s commitment to enhancing its public parks and making them more accessible for everyone.
