Aiming to Empower Women and Promote Diversity in the Construction Industry

NORTHWEST INDIANA — The Construction Advancement Foundation (CAF) has launched its new Women in Construction (WIC) program, designed to empower women within the construction industry while promoting equity, inclusion, and opportunities for future generations. With the mission of “Constructing Change,” the program aims to provide resources, mentorship, and a platform for women to excel in both professional and building trades roles within construction.

The CAFWIC program is spearheaded by a group of accomplished women leaders from various sectors of the construction industry. The founding members include:

  • Erin Deal, Berglund Construction
  • Jennifer Gough, Gough, Inc.
  • Amy Henningfield, Superior Construction
  • Margie Hoffman, Grimmer Construction
  • Allie Komarowski, Milestone Contractors
  • Lynda Niaves, Hasse Construction
  • Lyndie Walton, Continental Electric
  • Melody Weisberg, Construction Advancement Foundation

These women, who represent a diverse mix of experience from heavy civil construction, commercial projects, and more, are committed to building an industry that not only includes women but allows them to lead and thrive.

“Through mentorship, education, and outreach, we are committed to helping women of all ages see construction as a viable, rewarding career,” said Amy Henningfield, a founding member and a passionate advocate for women in construction.

A Commitment to Future Generations

In addition to fostering an environment where current female professionals can grow, the CAFWIC program is dedicated to inspiring young women to pursue careers in construction. The program aims to challenge stereotypes and raise awareness about the various opportunities in both the professional side of construction (such as project management, engineering, estimating, and accounting) and in the building trades, which may include union affiliation.

“The construction industry is full of possibilities, and we want to show young women that there’s a place for them here—whether it’s leading teams on-site or managing projects from the office,” Henningfield added.

The program aims to not only recruit young female talent but also create a mentorship network and provide the resources necessary for women to advance in the industry. Through education, workshops, and training, the CAFWIC program seeks to ensure that women are supported at every stage of their careers.

Program Highlights

The CAF Women in Construction program focuses on several key areas:

Recruiting and Inspiring Young Talent

Working with schools, communities, and organizations to encourage young females to explore careers in construction.

Mentoring and Empowering Women

Establishing a strong support network that encourages leadership development and career advancement.

Promoting Industry Inclusion

Opening doors for women in all areas of construction, from the jobsite to the boardroom.

Providing Training and Development

Offering workshops and resources for skill-building and professional growth.

Building a Community

Creating an inclusive environment for women to share experiences, collaborate, and support each other.

Why It Matters

As the construction industry faces a critical shortage of skilled professionals, attracting a diverse workforce is increasingly important. By empowering women and encouraging young females to join the field, the CAFWIC program aims to fill these workforce gaps and drive innovation across the industry.

“Creating a welcoming space for women in construction is not just about increasing the number of women in the industry—it’s about changing the way we approach challenges and driving collaboration and innovation,” said Melody Weisberg, a founding member of the program.

Join the Movement

The CAFWIC program is inviting women, allies, and young females across Northwest Indiana to get involved in this mission to empower women and foster equity in construction. Together, the program believes that women can help reshape the construction industry, not only by contributing but by redefining what’s possible for future generations.

As the program continues to grow, it will focus on addressing workforce gaps, creating mentorship opportunities, and providing leadership to women striving to make their mark in the construction world.

Through a shared commitment to inclusion, diversity, and empowerment, the CAFWIC program seeks to elevate the role of women in construction and ensure their continued success in shaping the future of the industry.
