Arkansas SkillsUSA Spotlights Construction Workforce Needs

Thousands of students from across Arkansas are converging on the Hot Springs Convention Center this week for the annual SkillsUSA Arkansas State Leadership and Skills Conference, held April 15–16. The high-energy, career-focused event offers young people a chance to compete in hands-on skilled trade challenges while forging critical connections with industry professionals.

Sponsored by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Arkansas, the event draws top students from a membership of over 3,100 across the state. Participants will put their skills to the test in dozens of trades, including architectural drafting, welding, carpentry, HVAC and refrigeration, electrical work, and plumbing. Winners in each category will advance to the national stage at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference later this year.
“We’re proud to provide a platform where tomorrow’s leaders and skilled professionals can connect with each other, sharpen their abilities and demonstrate their talent,” said Keith McKnight, Arkansas SkillsUSA state director. “We are thankful for our industry partners like AGC Arkansas who are making it possible for industry and its future workforce to connect.”
The conference is more than just a competition—it serves as a vital bridge between education and employment. At a time when the construction industry is facing a serious labor shortfall, events like this one help students visualize clear pathways to well-paying, in-demand careers.
According to data from the National Center for Construction Education and Research, a staggering 41% of the current U.S. construction workforce is projected to retire by 2031. That looming gap is driving employers to take a more active role in workforce development, particularly by supporting career and technical education initiatives such as SkillsUSA.
“The future of our industry depends on young people gaining real-world, hands-on experience in events like this one,” said Brad Spradlin, president and CEO of AGC Arkansas. “Our partnership with SkillsUSA allows us to directly invest in the growth of a skilled workforce, helping ensure that Arkansas’ construction sector continues to lead in both quality and innovation. We’re proud to support this effort and help build a pipeline of talent ready to contribute to Arkansas’ economic growth.”
Beyond competition, students also participate in leadership workshops, network with employers, and explore apprenticeship opportunities, certifications, and postsecondary pathways. Many of the industry partners involved in the event—including contractors, unions, and training organizations—use the conference as a recruiting ground for future hires.
With ongoing infrastructure investments and demand for skilled labor on the rise, construction leaders in Arkansas see the conference as a critical piece of the solution. By investing in young talent now, industry advocates hope to close the workforce gap and create sustainable career opportunities for the next generation.
“This is where the future begins,” McKnight said. “When we show students what’s possible and give them the tools to succeed, we not only change lives—we strengthen entire communities.”
