Suffolk has officially commenced the construction of the $1.1 billion Terminal E project at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, Florida. This marks the largest municipal construction project in Lee County's history. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 12, as confirmed by a news release from Suffolk, a Boston-based contractor. According to Wink News, the project stands as the most expensive municipal construction effort in the county's history.

This expansion project is part of a broader initiative to prepare RSW for projected increases in passenger traffic over the next decade. The airport saw a record-breaking year in 2024, serving more than 11 million passengers. Phase two of the project will enable the airport to accommodate between 10,000 and 15,000 more passengers daily.

The project is funded through a combination of resources from the Lee County Port Authority, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The initial phase of the terminal expansion, valued at $331 million, is being constructed by SNC-Lavalin, now known as AtkinsRéalis, which has faced delays due to design-related issues and challenges with the construction manager and firm, as reported by Wink News.
